Having been a resident (and employee) in McHenry County for many years, I assure you it is a wonderful county in which to live. McHenry County offers both country and city living.
Having been "raised" in Chicago, I assure you it is a City of fun and cultural activities beyond compare. It's suburbs offer the same, in addition to a fantastic commuter system for those wishing to be employed "Downtown" and live the suburbs. For those who wish to live in the midst of the Chicago city life, there is a variety of living available - from loft to condo, from "Brownstone" to the neighborhood "Two-flat". Chicago offers the ultimate in new high-rise condos in and near the "Loop" and on Lake Michigan, offering panoramic views of the city and Navy Pier.
I agree that searching the web is helpful is real estate "hunting" and in curbing your curiosity about what is available in the market. At some point, it is even more helpful to have an agent work with you whether it be to assist you in finding your first home, or in selling your present dwelling.
